I don&#8217;t like the idea of that.<\/p>\n<p>I do like the idea of an open-plan hallway that is used for other purposes &#8211; perhaps as a dining area.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes the treatment of the handrail and the safety rails can look very &#8220;busy&#8221; whereas I prefer a simple look. Something like this looks good:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ph_basingstoke_main.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-390\" alt=\"ph_basingstoke_main\" src=\"http:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ph_basingstoke_main-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ph_basingstoke_main-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/01\/ph_basingstoke_main.jpg 360w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The open treads of this design (actually they have glass risers) lend themselves to running LED striplights along the underside of each step to illuminate the step below, and then it&#8217;s possible to get creative with dimming those lights individually, in sequence, as people walk up and down the stairs.
