To put that into perspective, the Metric Handbook provides data to calculate that the 99.99th percentile of UK male height is almost exactly 2000mm – in other words only 0.01% of the UK male population is taller than 2000mm, which sounds like a small number but it’s actually more than 300,000 people (based on a UK population of about 64.5 million, 49.2% of whom are male).

I’m not expecting that fact to dominate the design but it does have an impact:

Door heights should be greater than the UK standard (1981mm) and also wider to retain roughly the normal aspect ratio.

The Building Regulations in The Netherlands require a “free passage” height of 2300mm (as per this page in the original Dutch or Google Translated into English). Due to that regulation it seems that 2315mm is a common door height to cater for the thickness of the door stop at the top of the frame.

Ceiling heights should be greater than normal, both to work with the taller doors and to create a greater feeling of space.

Shower spray nozzles need to be fitted higher than normal.

I’d be very happy with a bit of double-height space somewhere – probably in the hall / staircase / landing area.

This ended up being in the master bedroom, although the staircase from the first to the second floor is open to the (curved) second floor ceiling.

The sub-pages of this one capture information specific to the brief for the different rooms.
