{"id":5828,"date":"2025-05-25T16:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-05-25T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=5828"},"modified":"2025-05-26T13:46:17","modified_gmt":"2025-05-26T12:46:17","slug":"technical-articles-and-home-automation-and-monitoring-pages-restructured","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=5828","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Technical Articles&#8217; and &#8216;Home Automation and Monitoring&#8217; Pages Restructured"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>WordPress, the software used to manage this blog site, has two main types of &#8216;container&#8217; for content:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Pages<\/strong> which are the more &#8216;structured&#8217; way to manage text and images, typically arranged into a hierarchy of parents and children which are directly accessible from the menu bar\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These work best for relatively long and comprehensive articles on particular topics, which include a structure of headings and sections<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Posts<\/strong> which are shorter, less structured and form a &#8216;timeline&#8217; view where the two most recent posts appear on the home page and others are available by following &#8216;Older posts&#8217; links &#8211; or by picking a date in the calendar\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>These work very well for the daily &#8216;Regular Updates&#8217; while building work is underway, or other &#8216;news&#8217; &#8211; which might include the publication of a new Technical Article<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Both types of content can also be found using Category keywords or by the search function &#8211; and both are also indexed by Internet search engines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?page_id=701\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"701\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Technical Articles<\/a> menu has been getting a bit unwieldy and lacking a sensible structure. Some of the entries in there really belong in the adjacent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?page_id=4102\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4102\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Home Automation and Monitoring<\/a> menu, which was added later but never rationalised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So I&#8217;m doing a bit of housekeeping:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Adding a deeper hierarchy of menu levels to collect the Pages into a more logical structure<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Splitting \/ combining some pages to align better with that new structure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>While WordPress seems pretty good at persisting the URLs for Pages &#8211; even when they move under a different &#8216;parent&#8217; &#8211; there&#8217;s a chance some links might not work. Things will also be a little untidy while the housekeeping is underway (for the next few days at least).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m also working through the 25 Pages that were sitting in Draft status, without ever having been Published &#8211; generally because their content was not considered &#8216;finished&#8217;.
