{"id":7398,"date":"2026-08-31T12:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-08-31T11:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=7398"},"modified":"2026-08-31T13:22:10","modified_gmt":"2026-08-31T12:22:10","slug":"window-open-closed-contact-sensors","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/?p=7398","title":{"rendered":"Window Open \/ Closed Contact Sensors"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>One thing I sometimes wish I&#8217;d hard-wired for before plastering the House is contact sensors to report the open \/ closed state of the (openable) windows &#8211; mostly so that the automations which close the roller blinds can be &#8216;blocked&#8217; if a window is open. The sensors could also provide a useful confirmation that the building is secure when nobody is home. (There are already sensors as part of the intruder alarm system, but those respond to &#8216;shock&#8217; impact from any attempt to force open windows or doors and do not report open \/ closed status.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The workaround is to fall back to battery-powered radio-connected sensors. While I&#8217;m not generally a fan of battery-powered devices, they&#8217;re OK for non-critical uses like this &#8211; especially when they provide accurate reporting of battery status so battery failure can be predicted (or at least reported).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From a brief trial of one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/gb\/en\/p\/myggbett-door-window-sensor-smart-00624705\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IKEA MYGGBETT door \/ windows sensor<\/a> I&#8217;m happy those will work well enough to invest in a few more of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>They are powered by a single AAA battery and specifically recommend rechargeable batteries (such as the IKEA LADDA)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They use Matter over Thread for communications and management and so integrate very nicely with Home Assistant &#8211; especially since I&#8217;ve got a working Matter over Thread ecosystem in both the Outbuildings and the House<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They&#8217;re fairly compact &#8211; given they have to accommodate a AAA battery<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They&#8217;re competitively priced; \u00a37 each in 2026 (although that seems slightly expensive compared to \u00a35 for a TIMMERFLOTTE temperature &amp; humidity sensor) &#8211; whereas similar devices from other brands tend to be \u00a320 or more\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>That price does not include the battery, which is another \u00a31 (actually \u00a34 for a pack of 4)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They report battery status both as a voltage and as &#8220;percent charged&#8221; figure (to the nearest 1%)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>On the tilt-and-turn windows it&#8217;s best to mount the sensors at the top, so they report &#8216;open&#8217; no matter whether the window is tilted back or hinged open (like a door).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-7399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-2048x1536.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/IMG_2704-400x300.jpeg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">IKEA MYGGBETT door and window sensor mounted at the top of a tilt-and-turn window<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>These MYGGBETT sensors have a unique Matter ID printed along one side and I elected to mount them so that remains visible. There&#8217;s also a printed QR code used for commissioning but that&#8217;s only visible when the sensor is unclipped from its backplate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If I was doing this again, I would at least install the wiring for hard-wired sensors &#8211; which would mean checking which windows have opening sections (about half of them) and whereabouts on the opening windows the sensor would be located. I would wire them with 4-core &#8216;alarm&#8217; cable back to a central point, with the plan to connect them to a KNX binary input module &#8211; something like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdt.uk\/products\/product-detail\/sensors\/binary-inputs\/binary-inputs-be.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MDT BE-16000.02 Binary Input Module for Potential-Free Contacts<\/a>. Note that costs \u00a3200 for 16 channels, i.e. \u00a312.50 per input. In addition, there would be the cost of the cable (roughly \u00a31 for a 5m run) and the magnetic \/ reed-switch sensor itself (about \u00a32 each for <a href=\"https:\/\/alertelectrical.com\/cqr-sc517-surface-mount-magnetic-contact-grade-1-non-resistored-white-sc517-wh.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a basic &#8216;Grade 1&#8217; sensor<\/a>) which works out at about \u00a316 per window (assuming a 7.5m cable run) so actually the battery-powered sensors are roughly half the price &#8211; but need ongoing attention to their batteries.
