  1. We are having to do a similar operation and Openreach has delivered a box joint like the one you show. My question is: does the box joint go at the foot of the nearest telegraph pole from which our new supply will come underground, or at the point at which the supply enters the house. The distance between the two is roughly 150m and we shall be trenching and laying the cable in BT/Openreach supplied ducting. There have been no instructions!

    • Hi Judy,
Strange that they haven’t provided any instructions. The Openreach “Developer Handbook” is worth a read if you haven’t checked that already: https://www.ournetwork.openreach.co.uk/property-developers/developer-handbooks-and-extra-services.aspx

My cable dives straight underground at the pole and comes straight into the house so there’s no particular need to have a joint box at either of those locations. I needed a joint box because I was connecting a new cable to an existing underground cable run.

My cable was direct-buried SWA cable rather than in ducting so bear in mind Openreach will need to pull your cable through the ducts and 150m is quite a long distance to pull in one go. I’d be inclined to think the joint box should go somewhere along the cable route, to split the distance into more manageable chunks.

Is the route of the cable straight or are there bends? If you need a 90-degree bend somewhere along the route I’d put the joint box there. (There are some notes in the Developer Handbook which say to only have one pre-formed 90-degree bend in any one run of ducting.)

      David
