The bedrooms have a simple, momentary-action ‘Press’ wall switch which turns the main lights On or Off (press once for On, press once for Off – whether or not the state had been changed by some other means). The window blinds are controlled automatically. This covers the vast majority of the requirements and anything more advanced can be done with a mobile App, which provides full control.
The reception rooms have multiple lighting circuits and multiple blinds which generally warrant more control options. These are all controllable via a mobile App but often it’s just easier to use a wall switch so these rooms have KNX Wall Controls with a central display and 6 buttons. They’re MDT BE-TAS86.01 Push Button Smart 86 devices – the 86mm square form factor matches UK switch dimensions and they fit directly onto UK back boxes. These devices are very highly configurable (the programming is covered in a separate Technical Article) but from an end-user standpoint they’re relatively easy to use – although there are few nuances to point out.
The switches normally run in ‘Standby’ mode, where they show the Time (in GMT, even in Summer) and four Scene Selection options. The Scenes always include:
- On – middle button on the Right
- Off – middle button on the Left
- Bright – bottom button on the Right (good for cleaning)
The bottom Left button selects a custom Scene which varies by room (TV, Cooking etc.)
