When originally reviewing options for software to act as a home automation ‘hub’ in about 2015, there were few viable candidates that met all the key criteria – a key factor being excellent support for the KNX industry standard. At that time, it was openHAB that ticked all the boxes and served well for nearly 10 years, progressing through various upgrades over that time.

Roll forward to 2025 and it’s Home Assistant that has ‘won’ the race to be the dominant open source home automation hub solution. That does everything that openHAB does – and more.
