Hormann Series 4 Garage Door Operator Integration

Introduction

Each of the four garages have a Hormann RollMatic roller shutter. These are RollMatic 2 models which use the Series 4 control boards – and a key reason for choosing that model was the ease of integration with Home Automation systems. Those offer ‘bus’ integration using the HCPv2 protocol (from 2022 onwards). HCP is basically Modbus over RS485.

A summary of reverse-engineering the HCPv2 protocol is here: https://blog.dupas.be/posts/hoermann-uap-hcp1/

There are several requirements for ‘integration’ with these controllers:

  • For the intruder alarm system, to have an indication of when a door has been legitimately opened
    • This would want to be a simple and robust hard-wired integration
  • For lighting control, turning on internal and (conditionally) external lights when a door is opened
    • These lights will be connected to KNX-controlled relays and the (external?) lights only need to operate in the hours of darkness
      • There are no windows in the Garages so the internal lights will need to be used in (part of) the daytime too
    • For status reporting on some sort of ‘dashboard’, showing when doors are open or closed

Official Hormann Integration Options

Overview

There’s a nice overview of the ‘gateway’ options on the German-language Hormann website which appears not to have been reproduced in English: https://www.hoermann.de/smart-home-neu/homee/gateways/ Linked from that page is a useful compatibility summary document: https://www.hoermann.de/mediacenter/preview/301385de/87509_HCP_Uebersicht_130122.pdf which makes it clear the RollMatic 2 is less well supported than some of the other Series 4 operators, especially for the IP-based gateways.

HOR1-HCP

The HOR1-HCP is a single relay add-on board, intended to control supplementary garage lighting but which could also provide an output to an alarm system. It has NO and NC contacts. The Hormann model number is: 4514081.

UAP1-HCP

The UAP1-HCP is a three relay add-on board, with additional hard-wired inputs for push-buttons. UAP stands for “Universal Adaptor Plate” (in English at least). The Hormann model number is: 4514082. About £75.

Watch out for documentation for the older version of the UAP1 (for HCP v1) which has two bus connectors, enabling daisy-chaining.

KNX Gateway

The KNX Gateway interfaces the HCPv2 bus with the KNX bus. The gateway is actually designed and manufactured by Insta but it’s branded and marketed as Hormann’s own accessory. The Hormann model number is: 4511630. About £100.

The KNX/ETS technical manual is here.

When enquiring about purchasing this Gateway with the doors themselves the feedback was that it’s not sold in the UK. Buying it from Germany – which is the best option for German-made KNX modules from MDT, for example – was assumed to be straightforward but that proved difficult too: in December 2025 EIBMARKT declared these were not available for delivery. The best source proved to be Amazon EU, but even then supplies seem to be limited. One example (that must have been returned to Amazon) was only £13.50 but two more, purchased separately, were about £100.

Third-Party Integration Options

HCP MQTT Bridge

There are various Open Source endeavours to integrate with HCP.

A mature one with ‘official’ PCBs is: https://github.com/Tysonpower/HCPBridgeMqtt_tynet/tree/main but:

  • This has a WiFi connection to the TCP/IP network
  • It provides MQTT and Web UI interfaces
  • It would have a complex path to drive a relay for the Alarm system:
    • HCP -> MQTT -> HA Hub -> KNX -> Relay

Conclusion

While the Open Source route would be attractive in some ways, the most robust option is clearly the KNX gateway, coupled with a KNX Switch Actuator to provide the outputs to the alarm system.

The KNX gateway module is physically small and easily fits inside the bottom section of the door controller unit – though clearly it is necessary to route the KNX Bus cable to it there.
