This WordPress Site has Migrated to the Cloud

Up to now, this WordPress site has been hosted quite literally “in house”, running on a server in my loft and talking advantage of the not-strictly-static-but-hasn’t-changed-in-several-years IP address provided by my Virgin Media cable broadband connection. With my imminent departure I decided it was time to move it to an alternative location at a proper Internet hosting facility. I already use https://1and1.co.uk/ to provide Internet domain name services so the easy option was to use them to provide a web hosting service as well.

After a few experiments with the “Click and Build” WordPress installation offered by 1and1 and the Export / Import facilities that WordPress provides (which didn’t do a good job of moving photograph albums) I settled on the simple and relatively flexible option of just copying the MySQL database and the file & directory structure from my old web server to the new hosting location. So far the site is looking just like it used to before, and everything seems to be working OK.

I don’t have quite as much control over the web server configuration as I used to (at least not on the bargain basement hosting package I opted for) but that doesn’t seem to be causing any problems at the moment.

The design intent for accessing the site is as follows:

  • Anyone accessing http://www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk/ gets automatically redirected to http://www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk/wordpress/ via a http-equiv=”refresh” directive in index.html, which emulates the previous behaviour (though that was implemented via web server redirect instead).
  • Anyone accessing http://www.marshflatsfarm.org.uk/ (one T) gets automatically redirected to http://www.marshflattsfarm.org.uk/ (two Ts) which then redirects (again) as described above. Again, this matches the previous behaviour.

I notice that the migrated site automatically uses IPv6 for clients configured to support that, which pleases me very much.

Apologies to those people looking for an update on my design and build project and not having a clue what I’m going on about. Normal service will be resumed shortly.
