  1. Hi love the blog!! were you required by the building inspector to use oversight concrete beneath block and beam? In my case the exposed earth just had to be free of vegetation.

  2. Hi Sam. Thanks for following my blog. The oversite concrete wasn’t a specific BCO requirement but my architect and builder regarded it as standard practice. As the house owner it’s good to know that if moles or other animals get under the house they won’t be able to dig through the concrete.
On reflection the ground floor build-up could have been simpler and hence cheaper. Oversite Concrete + Beam-and-Block + 250mm Insulation + 150mm Reinforced Concrete Slab is a bulletproof solution but more complex than strictly necessary.

  3. Hi David,

I just had a quick query about the oversite concrete thickness. Was this a 50mm thick concrete over a compacted hardcore?

    Kindest regards

    Ricardo

    • Hi Ricardo,

There was no hardcore, just levelled and compacted subsoil, and while the thickness was probably about 50mm nobody measured it. I presume the relevant volume of concrete was ordered based on the floor area and a nominal thickness of about 50mm – and then the concrete was distributed across the various rooms to give roughly equal coverage.
