Week 35, Day 3

Week 35, Day 3:

  • Even more rain. The big puddles are back again!
  • More work on the Ground Floor, forming the 3m x 2m alcove in the south wall of the Living Room that will house the TV:
    • There’s a section of block-work that protrudes into the west side of the south wall, plus two soil-and-vent pipes
    • There will be a moulded coving at the wall-to-ceiling junction, with LED strip lights washing across the ceiling and down the wall
    • The coving will work a lot better if it forms a simple rectangle, so the south wall is being built out to extend the block-work section across the whole width
    • That leaves a false wall which provides an ideal place to form an alcove that will house the TV, centred left-right and also top-bottom
  • More electrical first-fix on the Ground Floor, installing the low-voltage wiring for the LED downlights in the open plan kitchen
  • Good progress on the domestic hot water system

Week 35, Day 2

Week 35, Day 2:

  • A little bit less rain, but it’s still wet and muddy
  • The concealed gutter in the south roof has proved problematic:
    • By cutting away a significant portion of the timbers to form the gutter, the overhanging roof has been sagging, unevenly
    • Some time ago we decided to add galvanized steel straps on the upper surface to restore the strength
    • Those straps were installed today – but they will need some more attention in order to form the zinc roof covering over them
  • The preparations for plastering are now mostly completed on the first floor as well as the second floor, so the building work has moved down to the ground floor
    • There’s quite a bit of stud-work required, to cover over the protruding steelwork and pipes on the south wall and to form some built-in cupboards and alcoves
    • In particular, it has always been the plan to have a concealed-but-accessible cupboard behind the door to the kitchen, holding the main electrical distribution boards (in addition to the sub-boards on the first and second floors), the underfloor heating manifolds etc.
  • The first floor is now ready for plastering and has been cleared and swept for the first time in a while
